To change from the larval stage to the pupal stage in the life cycle of an insect.
Origin:
From the latin pupa, meaning "doll" or "girl".
Examples:
- The caterpillar will pupate before it emerges as a butterfly.
- The maggots pupate in soil before they turn into flies.
- The dragonfly nymph will pupate before it emerges as an adult dragonfly.
- The mosquito larvae pupate in water before they turn into adults.
- The bee larvae pupate in the wax cells of the hive before they turn into adult bees.
