Subside (verb)

  1. To settle or sink to a lower or a settled position.
  2. To decrease in intensity or severity, or to become calm.
  3. To become less active, to die down.

Late 16th century (in the sense "sink to the bottom"): from latin subsidēre, from sub- "under" + sidēre "to sit".
