Not having all available bonding sites filled with atoms or groups.
Origin:
Late 19th century; formed from the prefix un- and the adjective "saturated".
Examples:
- The unsaturated fat was considered healthier than saturated fat.
- The unsaturated hydrocarbon had a double bond.
- The unsaturated soil absorbed water easily.
- The unsaturated solution had a lower concentration of solute.
- The unsaturated compound had a lower boiling point.
